Magic Socks: Immune Boosting Home Remedy

The “Magic Socks” treatment is a traditional hydrotherapy treatment that has been used for effectively to boost the immune system and restore vitality. When I first learned this remedy it was commonly referred to as the “Cold, Wet Sock” treatment. (Try getting the kids to try that one!) It has just recently taken on it’s new title with good reason, the remedy really works like a healing magic trick!

Smoke and mirrors aside, how does applying cold wet socks overnight actually help the immune system? The underlying mechanism of action is known as “heating compress.” The body is forced to regulate the thermal challenge. In the process of restoring balance, blood circulation is increased and the immune system is stimulated.

This concept of hydrotherapy dates back to ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations, hydrotherapy is also a primary modalities in Naturopathic Medicine. Hippocrates documented his early use of hydrotherapy and referred to the treatment as hydropathy. Heat and cold applied to the skin affect circulation via dilating (heat) or constricting blood vessels (cold). When peripheral blood vessels are dilated, they become a reservoir for blood, reducing the load on the organs. When they are constricted, blood is returned to the organs. Through this increased flow of circulation, the metabolism is optimized, the immune system is primed and ready to fight disease, while the body detoxifies itself gently.

Indications: Use this remedy at first sign of sore throat, cough, cold, sinus congestion, headache, or fever. It can also help promote restful sleep, and reduce anxiety. For best results repeat treatment for three nights in a row starting at first onset of symptoms. This is a simple and gentle therapy that can be wonderful for any age from infant to elderly!

Contraindications: Not recommended for babies under 3 months of age or on those with conditions involving poor circulation, unless directed by a doctor.

You will need:

  • Warm bath or foot soak

  • Towel

  • One pair thin cotton socks

  • One pair thick wool socks

  • Cozy bed

Directions:

  1. Wet a pair of thin, cotton socks in cold water

  2. Wring out excess water and place in the freezer.

  3. Warm the feet by soaking in tolerably hot/warm water or bath. Towel dry feet and body completely. (This step is optional but will increase the effectiveness of the treatment especially for less vital or cold sensitive individuals.)

  4. Take the socks out of the freezer (soften if needed) and place on feet.

  5. Place the dry thick wool socks over the cold wet socks, covering completely.

  6. Get tucked in to the cozy bed and rest.

  7. The socks stay on all night. They will feel warm within a few minutes and completely dry within a few hours.

I can personally attest to the safety and effectiveness of this remedy as I have used it dozens of times myself and on my children with surprising success! Give it a try and let me know what you think in the comments below.
