What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage involves application of firm pressure and slower, more specific techniques to reach deeper layers of muscle and fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles) It's commonly used to address chronic aches, pains, and tensions. Massage therapists may use hands, fingertips, knuckles, elbows, and forearms for trigger point release, cross-fiber friction, stripping on areas where there are troubled areas, adhesions or scar tissue. Heat packs, stretching and range of motion techniques are commonly used to help bring relief.

Who Can Benefit From Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage typically focuses on a specific problem, such as chronic muscle pain, injury rehabilitation, and has been known to benefit the following conditions:

  • General tension

  • Back/neck pain

  • Limited mobility

  • Recovery from injuries (whiplash, falls)

  • Repetitive strain injury (carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fascitis, tennis elbow)

  • Postural problems (scoliosis, text neck)

  • Fibromyalgia

    Deep Tissue massage may not be appropriate for those with blood clots (DVT), uncontrolled hypertension, chemotherapy, radiation, recent fractures or surgeries, open wounds, skin or other contagious infections.
