Suero is a refreshing beverage that has been used in my family for generations as way to hydrate during the scorching Sonoran Desert summers. As a young girl, I was taught how to prepare it and would do so for my father on the days he spent working outside. He would accept it with an enthusiastic “gracias, mija!” as he’d take refuge under the shade of a tree and emerge from under the rim of his sombrero to take a big gulp. There came the true expression of gratitude, the satisfied “Ahhhhhh” that follows a refreshing drink after a job well done. Suero helps the body endure heat, sweat, and hard work by replacing lost fluids and electrolytes. The addition of minerals to drinking water can help usher water into cells to hydrate on a cellular level. I especially enjoy suero as a refreshing treat after a sauna, gardening, hot yoga or sun exposure. I share this recipe in solidarity with my fellow desert dwellers enduring the summer heat. I hope this preparation proves to be as helpful in keeping your family balanced and healthy under testing conditions.
